Tragic accident claims life of 5-year-old near Martinez, driver apprehended

A tragic incident occurred earlier today when a five-year-old child lost their lives in a single-vehicle accident on westbound Highway 4 near Morello Avenue. This devastating news was confirmed by the California Highway Patrol of Contra Costa.

Based on the initial examination, it has been determined that a gray Honda CR-V, with one adult driver and two children on board, was heading west on Highway 4. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave the road and collide with a tree.

As per the CHP report, the driver of the vehicle suffered moderate injuries, while an 11-year-old passenger endured severe injuries that posed a threat to their life. Swiftly, both individuals were immediately transported to the hospital for urgent medical attention. Tragically, the young five-year-old passenger could not survive and was sadly pronounced deceased at the accident site.

The CHP’s on-scene investigation revealed that the five-year-old was not correctly secured in the child seat.

The police officers meticulously conducted a comprehensive investigation for DUI at the hospital premises, which ultimately led to the apprehension of the driver on charges of suspected driving under the influence and manslaughter.
